We are excited to be able to offer The GLA:D program for management of osteoarthritis of the hip and knee.

GLA:D is an evidence-based education and exercise program for individuals experiencing pain or stiffness in their hip(s) and/or knee(s) from osteoarthritis. Initially developed in Denmark and launched across Canada in 2016, this program combines education, neuromuscular exercise sessions and data collection to help those living with hip and knee osteoarthritis. GLA:D is a physiotherapist led program that will teach you the right way to move to reduce your osteoarthritis symptoms.

GLA:D consists of 4 parts:

1. Initial Physiotherapy Assessment:

  • 1 hour in length
  • Baseline measurements taken to track future progress.

2. Education sessions

  • 2 sessions, 90 minutes each
  • Learn about what is osteoarthritis, current treatments, self-management strategies and how exercise can help

3. Neuromuscular Exercise Sessions

  • 12 sessions (2 per week for 6 weeks), 60 minutes each
  • Build strength with functional exercises
  • Learn how to apply these exercises to everyday activities

4. Data Collection for Quality Monitoring

  • Data is collected at your first visit, 3 and 12 months after starting the program
  • Helps monitor how the program is working for people with osteoarthritis all over Canada and will help improve the program over time

The cost of the GLA:D program is $560 for all components:

The cost of the initial physiotherapy assessment ($110 of the $560 total) is billable directly to most insurance plans.

The education sessions and group exercise sessions are not direct billed, however participants can self-submit receipts to their own insurance companies. Participants in the past have been able to get these sessions covered by their insurance, sometimes through an extended health spending fund. We encourage you to speak to your insurance company about the program to determine what you are eligible for.
